Sandpaper Numbers

Sandpaper Numbers

Age: 3 - 4 years Area: Mathematics

Sandpaper Numbers consist of numerals 0-9 made of sandpaper mounted on wooden tablets. Children trace these numerals with their fingers while saying the name, connecting tactile, visual, and auditory learning.

Purpose

To introduce the symbols for quantities 0-9 through a multi-sensory approach, preparing for writing numbers and understanding numerical symbols.

Materials

  • Ten wooden tablets with sandpaper numerals 0-9
  • A small mat or carpet

Prerequisites

  • Experience with tracing (like Sandpaper Letters)
  • Counting skills

Presentation

1

Invite the child to the activity and prepare a work surface.

2

Select 2-3 tablets to start (typically 1, 2, and 3).

3

Hold tablet 1 at the child's eye level and say, "This is one."

4

Trace the numeral with your index and middle fingers, following the correct formation.

5

Invite the child to trace the numeral while saying its name.

6

Repeat with the other selected numerals.

7

Practice the three-period lesson: "Show me one," "What is this?", etc.

8

Gradually introduce more numerals in subsequent sessions.

9

Show the child how to return the materials to the shelf.

Control of Error

The sandpaper texture guides the finger along the correct path. The child receives tactile feedback if they deviate from the proper formation.

Extensions

  • Match sandpaper numbers to quantities (objects or Number Rods)
  • Trace numbers in a sand tray
  • Play "Bring me the number that shows [numeral]"
  • Create simple number sequences

Points of Interest

  • The contrast between the smooth tablet and rough sandpaper
  • The tactile sensation of tracing the numerals
  • The distinct shape of each numeral
  • The connection between symbol and quantity
